We all have those influential artists in our lives, whose work sticks out in our minds no matter how young we were when we first encountered them.  Audubon’s definitive bird illustrations have certainly been influential on many future generations of wildlife illustrators, myself included. 
 
I’ve worked to reinterpret many of Audubon’s signature works over the years, mostly mid-Atlantic birds which are familiar to my region.  The rattling call of a kingfisher as it flies over rivers or lakes is unmistakable. Often on a high limb, perched above a stream, but always watching… waiting…
